Immigration Law A day in the life of an illegal immigrant would be eye-opening for many Americans. To most Americans, illegal immigrants are detrimental to the economy and unfairly enjoying the benefits and provisions given to Americans through the Constitution. What most of these Americans do not understand is that the large majority of illegal immigrants did not immigrate to this country to cause trouble or steal the jobs of Americans. In fact, most of the immigrants have entered the country in hopes of receiving a new chance at life, and enter the country with high expectations for success.

The truth is, however, that many of these illegal immigrants live a tough life. Compared to the average American, illegal immigrants work significantly more hours for a significantly lower wage, and experience prejudice and unfairness in the workplace on a daily basis. In fact, many of these illegal immigrants struggle to find jobs, and live a very low quality of life by American standards. Still, the majority of illegal immigrants consider it a privilege to be in the United States, and even go to illegal measures to enter the country.

* Many illegal immigrants work for minimum wage, or just below minimum wage. These jobs are also very often tough, requiring a lot of physical labor or menial tasking.

* The typical Mexican worker earns one dime to the dollar of an American of similar circumstances. Many businesses are willing to hire cheap labor from abroad, a practice that is not often punished due to the broken immigration and employment laws and policy in the United States.

* If illegal immigrants do not stay in the United States, they will return home to few job opportunities, much lower pay, and struggling health care. This causes their families to live poorly with a low quality of life. Many immigrants send money back to their family, even if it is a marginal amount near $200 a week.

* Illegal immigrants must also live in fear of deportation or detention. Current immigration policy states that illegal immigrants living the United States are subject to determinations of removability by an immigration judge. With this fear, illegal immigrants live a life of hard work and tough luck while fearing that all the work may be for naught if deported.

* To enter the United States, some illegal immigrants pay money to what they call a “coyote,” or a person providing illegal transportation from the border into the United States.

Immigrants living the United States may live a tough lifestyle by American measure, but the large majority of them are happy with the life and opportunity provided to them by the United States. Although they are some of the hardest working individuals in the United States, immigration policy forces illegal immigrants to hide in the shadows, avoiding immigration agents and deportation. Without proper immigration policy reform, these illegal immigrants will continue to be mistreated and be given little to no rights.
