There are many different types of immigration forms in the United States. As a rule of thumb, any governmental application will require the filing of a specific form. The forms range in fees from free to hundreds of dollars, and range from simple to complicated. For example, the immigration form used for a fiancee visa has 14 detailed sections and costs approximately $600, while other forms such as a Waiver of Rights that are free-of-charge. Each of these immigration forms serve a unique purpose, and can be found on the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services website.

On their website, USCIS provides hundreds of different immigration forms in four distinct categories:

Green Card Immigration Forms

Green card forms are directed at individuals aiming for lawful permanent resident status in the United States. Included in these are applications to register for permanent resident or adjustment of status, immigration petitions for alien workers, application forms for travel documents, and immigrant petitions by alien entrepreneurs. Other forms include those pertaining to immigration by family members and relatives of refugees or asylees.

Citizenship and Naturalization Immigration Forms

These forms for used by individuals attempting to obtain citizenship, whether through naturalization or other means. Included in this group of immigration forms are requests for a hearing on naturalization proceedings, applications for naturalization, applications for a certificate of citizenship, applications for replacement naturalization or citizenship documents, and many more.

Employment Immigration Forms

Many immigrants come to the United States for job opportunities, no matter how big or small. This category of immigration forms is aimed at those individuals seeking legal employment in the United States. Included in these forms are petitions for non immigrant workers, immigrant petitions by alien entrepreneurs, petitions to remove conditions, and applications for authorization to issue certification for health care workers, as well as many more.

Family Immigration Forms

Many immigrants enter the United States alone, with hopes of bringing their family with them in the future. These immigration forms are aimed at issues pertaining to the family, including forms for an alien fiancee, petitions for alien relatives, petitions to classify orphans as an immediate relative, and determinations for suitability to adopt a child from another country. There are many other forms in this section, all of which relate to the family of immigrants and immigrant relatives of U.S. citizens.

As mentioned earlier, many of these forms require a filing fee, some of which are very high. The fee is sometimes waived by the USCIS in situations where it is proven the individual is unable to pay the fee. Additionally, the USCIS is aiming to improve customer service when filling out an immigration form. That is, it allows an individual to download and print out the forms or even fill out forms on the computer. Though the immigration form may be filled out online, the completed form must then be printed out and sent in the mail to a USCIS office.
